The Legacy of Aaliyah’s 2000 VMA Look: Still Roaring Decades Later

In a moment that has since become fashion canon, Aaliyah stepped onto the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet wearing a Roberto Cavalli animal-print dress that was equal parts sleek, fierce, and unforgettable, like the beloved singer herself. The one-shouldered tiger dress—cut close to the body and trimmed with a trail of burnt orange fringe—was an embodiment of early-2000s red-carpet drama and Aaliyah’s signature balance of elegance, but with a distinct edge.

At just 21, Aaliyah was already a certified icon in both music and style. She brought something entirely fresh to the red carpet: a look that was sensual but self-assured, playful but powerful. Cavalli’s wild print—a tiger-stripe pattern in yellow and black—became a fashion flashpoint, a symbol of turn-of-the-century glamour fused with untamed confidence.

Twenty-five years later, this look continues to inspire. In 2021, Bretman Rock shook us by wearing the exact dress to the MTV VMAs, sharing on Instagram, “I love Aaliyah and am so honored to have been able to wear this 21 years after her.”

That same year, Paloma Elsesser paid homage by wearing the design to a wedding, telling Vogue, “I’ve always been obsessed with this look. It spoke to an era of cool regality …and Aaliyah is the image of this moment that will always be sacred to me.”

And Tyla paid her respect by wearing a blue version of the dress, from the fall 200 Roberto Cavalli runway, to the MTV Europe Music Awards last fall.

More than two decades later, this image of the tremendously talented Aaliyah remains one of the most powerful representations of Y2K glamour: daring, deeply individual, and endlessly referenced.
