Texas Style Two-Step: McConaughey’s “Professor Cool” vs. Chalamet’s Indie Ease

When it comes to celebrity style, the two words that usually precede that are red carpet, not town hall. Yet, here we are – all thanks to Matthew McConaughey and Timothée Chalamet’s lesson in fashion at the recent CNN x Variety town hall event.

While speaking with students at the University of Texas at Austin, where McConaughey is a professor of practice at the school’s Moody College of Communication, the Oscar-winning actor and Chalamet, the it-guy of the moment, showed up looking like two different answers to the same question: how do you dress for a “big conversation” without dressing like you’re trying too hard?

The best part is that neither look feels like red-carpet costuming. It’s menswear that reads human: approachable, lived-in, and still intentional.

McConaughey’s vibe is what we’d call Texas professor cool. A dark shirt that sits close to the body, trousers that actually fit, a belt that looks like it’s been with him for years, and a cap that makes the whole thing feel grounded instead of “styled.” It’s the kind of outfit that says: I can walk into a room and hold it, without shouting.

Chalamet, meanwhile, lands on off-duty ease. Open-collar shirt, classic jeans, boots. It’s relaxed, but not sloppy. And that’s the point: when the basics are right, they read like confidence rather than effort. (The secret sauce is almost always the same three things: fit, fabric, and footwear.) One is tailored and rooted. The other is youthful and straightforward. Same setting, two energies, and both feel wearable.

Here’s how we’re reimagining these looks sustainably: responsibly made and pre-owned. Think of it as vibe-first, footprint-second, and no costume energy allowed.
