Sofia Coppola turns her camera towards a longtime confidant in her first documentary, Marc by Sofia, premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. The film is set to offer an intimate look at designer Marc Jacobs, directed by one of his closest and mutually respected creative allies.
Coppola and Jacobs share a creative rapport and friendship that spans more than three decades, beginning just after Jacobs’ now-iconic Spring ’93 Grunge collection for Perry Ellis. What started as mutual admiration evolved into countless creative endeavors, from Coppola directing his Daisy fragrance ads to collaborating on Jacobs’ SC Bag Collection in 2009. At the time, Coppola told WWD that she wanted to create “something low-key to carry all your stuff in the day, for traveling or around New York.” She added, “…and something not too heavy and not flashy, but cute.” The collection became an instant classic and remains sought after by fashion collectors.

While we saw Jacobs in front of the camera in the 2007 Loïc Prigent documentary Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton, Coppola’s Marc by Sofia distinguishes itself through the intimacy of its perspective. In a 2015 interview with Dazed, Jacobs shared, “Sofia was one of the few who recognized something special and related to what I was doing at that time. She wanted to meet me, and when we did, it was love at first sight for me…She represented everything I am drawn to — talent, style, creativity, a unique ‘vision and voice’.”

The Festival runs from August 27th through September 6th. While not much has been revealed about what transpires in the film, we can only hope to see archival footage and candid moments of the lauded designer, seen through the lens of the creative twin flame who has been alongside him on numerous projects for so many years. As we excitedly await seeing the full frame of the story come into focus, knowing this duo, expect something tender, refined, and unforgettable.
